Here is the interview of the super cute Lunatix from Scotland ! She don't have a lot of cosplays yet, but her cosplays are more original and less common than usual ! With surprising ones like Spyro the dragon or even the bad guy Negan from The Walking Dead !
1. For how long have you been in cosplay ?
I've been officially cosplaying since 2014, but before that I was very much into the "Furry" fandom and making ears and tails ect, which is what lead me to discovering cosplay.
2. Cosplay is a time consuming hobby. how long does it take to craft your costumes ?
Costumes can take anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months! My worst habit is working on cosplays here and there for a couple of months then rushing them at the last minute!
3. Any other hobby or passion besides cosplaying ?
I'm a photographer! That also ties in well with cosplay because cosplayers always need photographers and I love to photograph cosplayers, it also allows me to do my own photo editing and self portraits.
4. What materials are you using for cosplay crafting, worbla ? Foam ? Can you talk about that a little bit ? I've seen we have transparent worbla now...
Foam is great, I love foam, you can honestly make anything from it as there are so many different types of it. I love using expanding foam, I have used that for a couple of cosplay props so far, my most recent project being my "Lucille" bat for my Female Negan cosplay, but it is sooo messy and you constantly have to tidy up after yourself. EVA foam mats and craft foam are also a key component to many of my cosplays and I have used it in a number of different ways, such as entirely on it's own, combined with paper mache or even combined with worbla. I've used worbla with a couple of my cosplays and if I could afford it, I would use it all the time! I'm yet to try out the other options such as transparent worbla or black worbla!
5. Do you have any FAVORITE cosplayer ?
I have too many favourite cosplayers! But if I had to narrow it down to a few, I'd say Kinpatsu, Kamui and Starbit
6. Did you hurt yourself while making a cosplay or in a convention ?
Besides many blisters from heat/glue guns and cuts from craft knives/scissors, I've never really had a serious injury besides giving myself a lot of back/joint pain from too much walking and standing. I did once break my toe in a non cosplay related injury and when it finally healed, I wore a pair of heels for a cosplay and ended up damaging it again and had to go to hospital!
7. Do you sell your old cosplays, or just keep it in a huge closet ?
I have a spare room in my house where I keep my cosplays! Sadly we are moving and I might not have the same amount of space in our next house so I've been selling some of my cosplays. I'd much prefer them to have a new home rather than be put into storage.
8. Who teached you to craft your cosplays ? Your family ? By reading books or watching youtube tutorials ?
Everything I've learned has been from the internet or from fellow cosplay friends.
9. Which conventions are you going to this year ?
I have already been to 4 cons so far and coming up this year I have: Insomnia Gaming Festival, Play Expo, Glasgow Comic Con, Cos-Con Glasgow & Aberdeen, Film and Comic Con Glasgow and finally MCM Scotland. I'm also already booked for Walker Stalker Con London in 2017!
10. What is your limit budget for a cosplay ?
I like to keep my limit for cosplays generally at about £150, but will allow it to go higher for some!
11. Any future super secret cosplay project in mind ?
It wouldn't be a secret if I told you! I'm pretty private about my cosplays and often have people say "Oh, I had no idea you were working on this costume" but that's only because I don't like hyping up a costume and then not doing it very well. But I will tell you that I have got the Genderbend cosplay bug and have a few ideas for more characters I want to do!
12. What are you doing in "real" life for a living ?
I am a student at City of Glasgow college and will be graduating this year.
13. You best experience from a convention ? And your worst ?
As you might be able to tell from my cosplays, I am a massive Walking Dead nerd and this year I attended Walker Stalker Con in London where I met lots of cast members and had the best time of my life. A moment that really stood out to me was when Lawrence Gillard Jr. who plays "Bob", a character who I called my favourite for a while spotted me cosplaying Beth Greene and starts pointing at me and calling me over to his stall for a hug and a wee chat! I was totally shocked and know for a fact if I hadn't been cosplaying a character who he knew, it wouldn't have happened!
My worst experience though would have to be not being able to handle my first ever London convention. Being a Scottish cosplayer, I was used to small, friendly, comfortable conventions and when I went to a certain London con, I felt like I'd been thrown in at the deep end and I was surrounded by so many people, many of which were very rude, the convention was very hot and stuffy and I began to have a panic attack when I went off by myself and got lost. It wasn't a very pleasant experience but I still had a great weekend in the end!
14. Any advice for cosplay wannabees or beginners ?
Stop telling yourself you're not good enough! Cosplaying is all about just having fun, if you're not having fun then you need to take a step back and think about what we all are- Nerds in silly costumes, nothing more, nothing less. It's great to look up to super talented costumers but please don't compare yourself to those who have been doing it for years and are very skilled/professional. Costume making takes a lot of time and dedication to master. Remember, everybody starts somewhere!
15. Do you have limits ? Some cosplays you will never make (too sexy, too hard, too heavy...) ?
I never like to say that I won't ever do a certain cosplay as I'm always up for a challenge. At the moment though, costumes with too much skin on show aren't really my thing personally, but I know at some point down the line that will probably change.
